Are Carpet Cleaning Products Safe for Children and Pets?
Everything parents and pet owners need to know about carpet cleaning product safety. Learn what makes Al Haya's products safe and what chemicals to avoid in your home.
For families with young children and pets in the UAE, carpet cleaning product safety is not a minor concern — it is a primary consideration. Children spend significant time on the floor, and pets are in constant contact with carpet surfaces. Any chemical residue left after cleaning can be absorbed through skin contact, inhaled as the carpet dries, or ingested by babies who put their hands in their mouths after touching the floor.
At Al Haya, all our cleaning products are non-toxic, biodegradable, and free from the harsh chemicals found in many commercial cleaning solutions. We do not use products containing chlorine bleach, ammonia, formaldehyde, phthalates, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Our products are specifically formulated to be effective on carpet soiling while leaving zero harmful residues after drying.
The concept of eco-friendly carpet cleaning goes beyond just the cleaning solution. Our entire process is designed to minimise chemical impact: we use the minimum effective concentration of cleaning product, our extraction process removes the cleaning solution along with the dissolved dirt (rather than leaving it in the carpet), and our products biodegrade completely within days. After cleaning and drying, there is no active chemical residue remaining on the carpet surface.
For parents of young children, the most important safety factor is what remains on the carpet after it dries. Many conventional carpet cleaning products leave behind surfactants (detergent residues) that continue to attract dirt and can irritate sensitive skin on prolonged contact. Our rinse-and-extract process removes both the cleaning agent and the dissolved soil, leaving the carpet fibres genuinely clean — not coated in residue.
Pet safety considerations include both direct contact and the risk of pets licking or chewing carpet fibres. Dogs and cats are closer to the floor than humans and inhale more of any airborne residues during the drying period. Our products are specifically tested to be safe for animal contact. Additionally, our enzyme-based pet odor treatments use natural enzymes rather than chemical deodorizers, making them safe for continued pet contact with the treated area.
If you are particularly concerned about product sensitivity — for example, if a family member has chemical sensitivities, severe allergies, or compromised immune function — we can provide the specific product names and safety data sheets before your appointment. We are transparent about what we use because we are confident in the safety of our product range.
One important note: while our professional products are safe for families, many store-bought carpet cleaning products are not. Consumer carpet cleaners often contain bleaching agents, strong fragrances, and chemical degreasers that can leave problematic residues. If you use any home cleaning products on your carpet between professional visits, check the label for warnings about skin contact, ventilation requirements, and pet safety.
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon can children play on the carpet after cleaning?
Once the carpet is fully dry — typically 2 to 4 hours after our cleaning — it is completely safe for children to play on, crawl on, and sit on. During the drying period, we recommend keeping children and pets off the damp carpet, not because of chemical concerns, but because walking on damp carpet can leave impressions and slow the drying process.
Do your products have a strong chemical smell?
No. Our products have a very mild, clean scent that dissipates as the carpet dries. We do not use strong artificial fragrances to mask odors — we eliminate odors at the source. After drying, your carpet should smell simply clean and fresh, not perfumed or chemical.
Can I request fragrance-free products?
Yes. If any family member is sensitive to fragrances, we can use completely fragrance-free cleaning solutions. Let us know when booking and we will ensure the appropriate products are used for your appointment.
