Summer Carpet Cleaning Tips for UAE Residents

How to protect and maintain your carpets during the UAE's intense summer months. Practical tips for managing humidity, sand, and AC-related carpet issues from June to September.

The UAE summer — roughly June through September — brings extreme heat, increased sand storms, and higher humidity that creates specific challenges for carpet care. Understanding and addressing these seasonal factors helps protect your carpet investment during the toughest months of the year.

Humidity is the biggest summer carpet concern. Even with air conditioning running, the transition between the extreme outdoor humidity and the cool indoor environment creates condensation risk. When doors open and close, humid outdoor air rushes in and meets the cold indoor surfaces. Carpet fibres can absorb this brief moisture exposure, and over repeated cycles, enough moisture accumulates to create musty odors and, in severe cases, mildew growth at the carpet base.

Keep your AC running consistently during summer, even when you leave the house. Turning off the AC during the day while you are at work allows indoor humidity to spike. The carpet absorbs moisture during these warm, humid periods. When the AC comes back on in the evening, the surface dries but moisture trapped deep in the pile and backing remains. Setting the AC to 25 or 26 degrees while away is more effective than turning it off completely.

If you are leaving Dubai for a summer holiday, do not turn off the AC entirely. Extended periods without climate control during UAE summer can lead to significant moisture buildup in carpets, soft furnishings, and even walls. Set the AC to a moderate temperature — 26 to 27 degrees — and consider asking a neighbour or building management to check periodically. The electricity cost of running the AC at a moderate setting is far less than replacing mildew-damaged carpets.

Summer sand storms increase the amount of fine particulate matter entering your home. After a major sand storm, you may notice a fine layer of dust on all surfaces. Carpets trap this storm dust effectively, which is good for air quality in the short term but means the carpet is accumulating abrasive particles faster than usual. After any significant sand storm, vacuum all carpeted areas thoroughly — ideally on the same day.

Summer is actually an excellent time to schedule professional deep cleaning. The intense indoor AC keeps humidity low during the cleaning process, which means carpets dry faster than during the milder winter months. Additionally, a professional deep clean at the start of summer removes any particles and bacteria that could contribute to moisture-related issues during the hottest, most humid months ahead.

For homes that will be vacant during part of summer — common in the UAE where many residents travel during school holidays — schedule a professional cleaning before you leave. Starting the vacant period with clean carpets reduces the risk of odor development during the weeks of reduced ventilation. Ensure the AC remains on at a moderate setting, and the carpets will be fresh when you return.
