Sofa Cleaning in Dubai — A Complete Guide for Every Fabric Type
Everything you need to know about professional sofa cleaning in Dubai. Covers fabric, leather, velvet, microfiber and majlis cleaning with care tips and pricing expectations.

Your sofa is probably the most-used piece of furniture in your home, yet it receives a fraction of the cleaning attention given to floors and surfaces. In Dubai apartments and villas, sofas accumulate a surprising amount of hidden contamination — body oils, dead skin cells, food crumbs, pet dander, dust mite populations, and the ever-present fine desert sand that works its way into every indoor surface. Professional sofa cleaning addresses what daily surface maintenance cannot reach.
Fabric sofas are the most common type in UAE homes and the most straightforward to clean professionally. The key factor is identifying the specific fabric type before any cleaning begins. Cotton and linen upholstery responds well to water-based extraction cleaning — the same general principle as carpet cleaning, adapted with lower pressure and gentler agitation for the thinner material. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and microfiber are more resistant to water and cleaning agents, allowing for more aggressive stain treatment when needed. Every fabric sofa has a manufacturer's cleaning code — W means water-based cleaning is safe, S means solvent-only, WS means either method works, and X means professional cleaning only with no liquids.
Leather sofas require a completely different approach. Water-based cleaning can damage leather by stripping its natural oils and protective finish, leading to cracking and discolouration. Professional leather cleaning uses pH-balanced, leather-specific cleaners that lift dirt and oils without disturbing the leather's moisture balance. After cleaning, a leather conditioner is applied to restore suppleness and maintain the protective surface layer. In the UAE, leather sofas face additional stress from air conditioning — the constant cool, dry air draws moisture out of leather over time, accelerating the drying and cracking process. Conditioning every six months is recommended for leather furniture in Gulf homes.
Velvet upholstery has become increasingly popular in Dubai living rooms and requires careful handling. Velvet's pile direction gives it that characteristic sheen, and incorrect cleaning can crush or distort the pile, leaving permanent marks. Professional velvet cleaning uses low-moisture techniques with gentle suction rather than aggressive scrubbing. Steam is used sparingly and always in the direction of the pile. Velvet stains should never be rubbed — only blotted — as rubbing crushes the pile fibres and creates a visible mark even after the stain itself is removed.
Majlis seating — the traditional Arabic floor-level or low seating found in many UAE homes — presents unique cleaning challenges due to its size, construction, and the heavy use it receives during gatherings. Majlis cushions are often large, heavy, and difficult to move, with fabric choices ranging from ornate brocade to simple cotton. Because majlis seating is closer to the floor, it picks up more sand and dust than elevated sofas. Professional majlis cleaning typically involves on-site treatment with extraction equipment, treating each cushion individually and allowing adequate drying time before restacking.
The frequency of professional sofa cleaning depends on usage intensity. For a two-person household with no pets, annual professional cleaning is usually sufficient. Families with children should clean every six months — children's food spills, juice stains, and general contact transfer significantly more soil to upholstery. Pet-owning households benefit from professional cleaning every three to four months, as pet hair, dander, and oils accumulate quickly in fabric weaves. Homes that entertain frequently or use majlis seating for regular gatherings may need quarterly cleaning for those specific pieces.
Between professional cleanings, the best maintenance practice is weekly vacuuming of all upholstered surfaces with an upholstery attachment. Cushion covers that are removable should be rotated and flipped regularly to distribute wear evenly. Address spills immediately by blotting — never rubbing — with a clean, dry cloth. Keep sofas out of direct sunlight where possible, as UV exposure fades fabric and weakens fibres over time. In Dubai's sunny climate, consider UV-filtering window treatments for rooms with expensive upholstered furniture.
